Description

Interested in a volunteer opportunity you can do for school, work, or just for fun, that you can do on your own or with your household? Calling middle and high school students and scout groups! Come to the Don Edwards SF Bay National Wildlife Refuge and take photos to record the high tides called King Tides. The Refuge has a few spots around Alviso to view the year's highest tides. Participants will snap photos and submit them to the Refuge's Friends organization, the San Francisco Bay Wildlife Society, at [email protected]">[email protected]. They can also share them on social media with the hashtag #KingTidesAlviso2024 and tag the group on Instagram @sfbayws.

Description

Want to learn more about the large-scale restoration projects taking place around the San Francisco Bay? Interested in how the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge and its partners undertake daily restoration activities? Looking to improve your outdoor spaces and make them more watershed-friendly and drought-resistant?

I n this new program developed by San Francisco Bay Wildlife Society and San Francisco Bay Bird Observatory (SFBBO), you will learn about the various projects taking place on Refuge land, how you can get involved, and how our partners are doing the work to create more resilient ecosystems for a more sustainable future!

We will spend time in the Refuge Environmental Education Center's Butterfly Garden, maybe get our hands dirty pulling some weeds (just kidding, gloves will be provided), and check out the work that SFBBO is doing in the on-site plant nursery.

This program will also take a closer look at the construction of the levee onsite through the South San Francisco Bay Shoreline Project (read more here).

Spots are limited, so sign up soon if the event interests you.

Other Considerations:

Program participants will walk approximately a half-mile as we explore the Butterfly Garden and the Nursery.
The weather will likely be warm and sunny, so participants are encouraged to wear sun protection like sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses and bring plenty of water and snacks and bring layers in case it gets a bit windy.
ADA-compliant parking spaces, trails, and restrooms are available on site.
Restrooms will be available in the form of an ADA-compliant portable toilet and hand-washing station.
Please follow safety precautions and abide by CDC guidelines.

Help restore our Bay and get some much needed fresh air at the Refuge!

Come out to the Don Edwards National Wildlife Refuge for a few hours to restore part of the Bay at this Keep Coyote Creek Beautiful/San Francisco Bay Bird Observatory volunteer work party. While you are removing invasive vegetation, planting new plants, or laying down mulch, you'll get to enjoy the fresh air of the Bay, see lots of birds, and learn from restoration experts about why this work is so important.

Community service hours available.

REQUIREMENTS TO PARTICIPATE:

*Follow current County requirements related to COVID-19. Since this event has a mix of vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals, wearing a mask and keeping 6-foot social distance when possible is required. Keep Coyote Creek Beautiful will not provide masks. Also if you feel ill on the day of the event, you agree that you will not attend.

*Must acknowledge that you are 12+ years of age and you are here on your own time, and if you are 12-17 years of age that you will have an adult responsible for you during the entire event.

An abandoned town in the San Francisco Bay? That’s right! Nestled on an island in the salt marshes of South San Francisco Bay, the town of Drawbridge once boomed. Was it a quiet, peaceful town full of nature lovers, or people scrabbling out a living? How long did it exist? Find out at this program, led by Ceal Craig. We will start with a slideshow, and then take a short van excursion to view Drawbridge across Coyote Creek. The Local Government Forum meeting being held on 1/4/06 was to provide local government officials and staff an opportunity to review and comment on the proposed project alternatives that would be further discussed at the Stakeholder Forum meeting held the following week. Preliminary Options Considerations
This document presents the preliminary pond complex options, integrating habitat restoration, flood management, and public access. The options were developed by applying a set of criteria, referred to as “considerations‚” to the project area. The considerations take into account the project objectives, evaluation criteria, and guiding principles, as well as opportunities and constraints and conceptual models of habitat restoration (in progress). The Alternatives Development Framework (ADF) lists the project objectives and evaluation criteria and describes how the options fit within the overall alternatives development process.

Description

If you have an interest in wildlife and their conservation, enjoy working with people, and are enthusiastic and dependable, the Refuge's volunteer program is for you! As a volunteer, you'll receive on-the-job training from staff and other volunteers in the project area you choose. Project areas are restoration projects, information desk on weekends, interpretive programs, school field trips, and citizen science/community service. Volunteer Requirements: attend a volunteer orientation; attend the scheduled trainings; meet the age requirements for the program. Volunteer applications provided at orientation.
