Description

On October 9, 2024, as part of the 2024-25 Restoration Project Brown Bag Science Speaker Series, Gavin Archbald of H. T. Harvey & Associates shared how restoration ecologists have helped Don Edwards Refuge maximize the amount of soil it obtains to build habitat and levees while ensuring that soil has low contaminant levels so wildlife and wetlands are protected. Archbald discussed his work implementing and refining the regulator-required Refuge plan for sampling soil pollutants and managing which soils are clean enough to place onsite. He provided an overview of this plan, called the Quality Assurance Project Plan for the Don Edwards National Wildlife Refuge or QAPP, how it is implemented, and how the document has been refined over the past 6 years to provide greater flexibility to import soil needed for restoration while remaining protective of aquatic habitats.

Summary

Because high tides increase in elevation across South San Francisco Bay, and because tidal inundation structures tidal salt marshes plant zonation, species distribution models (SDMs) of salt marsh plants require integrated, spatially continuous measures of tidal patterns and elevation. Continuous Lidar elevation data is available for South San Francisco Bay, but tidal datum values from National Ocean Service (NOS) tidal stations in the region are available only as point locations. In order to effectively normalize Lidar elevations to tidal heights, an interpolated data layer of tidal datums was created in ArcGIS. MHHW from 16 tide stations were extracted from tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov, translated to NAVD88 using a conversion table created by NOS for a 2005 hydrographic survey, then interpolated using the spline tool in ArcGIS. Then, the lidar elevation layer was subtracted from the MHHW layer, normalizing elevation relative to MHHW and creating an input meaningful for region wide marsh vegetation distribution models. Results and sources of error in the output are discussed.

for the South Bay Salt Pond Restoration Project (SBSPRP or the project) by the University of San Francisco and H. T. Harvey & Associates. This work focused on a key uncertainty affecting the South Bay Salt Pond Restoration Project planning and adaptive management process (EDAW et al. 2007), specifically: “Will sediment accretion in restored tidal areas be adequate to create and to support emergent tidal habitat ecosystems within the 50-yr projected time frame?” To address this question, our team monitored sediment dynamics at Pond A6 (breached in 2010) and elevations of vegetation establishment at Ponds A6 and A21 (one of the Island Ponds and breached in 2006) between December 2010 and March 2013.
