Executive Summary excerpts:

The goal of this collaboration is to survey managed ponds and other habitats for snowy plovers, track breeding success, and contribute to the management and recovery of this species in the San Francisco Bay estuary. During the 2025 breeding season, SFBBO monitored snowy plover population size, nesting and fledging success, and potential predators at nine historical salt production pond complexes in the South San Francisco Bay.

During the Pacific Coast rangewide winter window survey (January 18 – 26, 2025) SFBBO and other organizations counted a total of 371 adult snowy plovers within RU3, while during the breeding season window survey (May 17 – 25, 2025), SFBBO and other organizations counted a total of 389 adult snowy plovers within RU3. Over the course of the breeding season (March –September), SFBBO staff determined and documented the fates of 380 snowy plover nests in the South San Francisco Bay. Of the 380 nests monitored by SFBBO, 59% hatched, 29% were depredated, 2% were abandoned, 1% failed to hatch or were flooded, 2% failed due to an unknown cause, and the fate of 7% of nests was unknown. An additional 81 nests were detected at the brood stage.

A summary of 2025 nesting activity by pond complex or management unit follows:

On Refuge property, SFBBO monitored 65 nests in the Alviso Complex, 89 nests in the Ravenswood Complex, and 7 nests in the Warm Springs Unit. Apparent nest success was 57% at Alviso, 51% at Ravenswood, and 25% at Warm Springs. SFBBO detected 25 and 11 nests at the brood stage at Alviso and Ravenswood, respectively.

On CDFW property, SFBBO documented 156 nests at Eden Landing Ecological Reserve (ELER), finding that apparent nest success was 68%. Fifteen nests were detected at the brood stage.

On Cargill, Incorporated (Cargill) managed property, SFBBO monitored 26 nests in the Dumbarton  Complex and found one additional nest at the brood stage. Apparent nest success in this complex was 50%. In Cargill’s Redwood City crystallizers, H. T. Harvey located four nests plus an additional 11 nests at the brood stage.

On Alameda County Flood Control District (ACFCD) property, SFBBO documented the fate of six nests at Patterson Pond, with an apparent hatch rate of 17%.

At Hayward Regional Shoreline, EBRPD reported one snowy plover nest on Least Tern Island, which hatched (D. Riensche, pers. comm. 2025). SFBBO documented 23 nests at the Oliver Brothers North (OBN) ponds, Pond 3B, and Frank’s Dump West (FDW). Apparent hatch rate was 78%. Six additional nest were detected at the brood stage.

On MROSD property, SFBBO documented three nests and Crittenden Marsh, finding an apparent nest success of 33%.
