Project Description

Maddy Schwarz, Snowy Plover and Least Tern Director at the San Francisco Bay Bird Observatory (SFBBO), discusses one of the Restoration Project’s most charismatic megafauna, the threatened Western Snowy Plover. Snowy plovers nest and raise their chicks on stretches of dry ponds, where their eggs and young are vulnerable to predators from the ground and above. Schwarz discusses plover ecology and life history, conservation threats, conservation management strategies, how people can get involved in plover conservation, and how the birds fared in the 2024 breeding season. The January 7, 2025 presentation was part of the South Bay Salt Pond Restoration Project Lunch and Learn Science Speaker Series.
