Salt Ponds to Wetlands
- 10 September 2024
Project Description
Mark Jones for the Metropolitan Transportation Commission/Association of Bay Area Governments provides an overview of the South Bay Salt Pond Restoration Project and video of a summer 2024 tour of its wetlands in the Alviso, Hayward, and Menlo Park areas.
Federal, state and local partners, are working to restore the tidal wetlands that once surrounded the bay but were replaced by a once thriving industry. Restoring the wetlands is a critical piece of preparing our homes and cities to climate change and sea level rise. The South Bay Salt Pond Restoration Project is the largest tidal wetland restoration project on the West Coast. When complete, the Project will restore 15,100 acres of industrial salt ponds to a rich mosaic of tidal wetlands and other habitats. Mark Jones has the story.
