Join San Francisco Bay Bird Observatory at Eden Landing to help enhance habitat for endangered California least terns!

Volunteers will join SFBBO staff at Pond E14, which supports one of only six least tern breeding colonies in the San Francisco Bay estuary.

To help improve tern breeding success, we will remove predator perches and, at the colony site, thin overgrown vegetation that reduces breeding habitat quality. We will also enhance the habitat by:

  • Installing chick shelters, which provide cover for vulnerable chicks from avian predators
  • Stomp on the pond to increase pond texture to help terns blend in - the depressions left by footprints have the added bonus of providing a nest “scrape” for Least Terns to lay their eggs in!
  • And install least tern decoys to attract these endangered birds to the enhanced areas.

Coffee will be provided by Andytown Coffee Roasters (known for their Snowy Plover coffee drink)!

Please register here. Additional information will be provided in the confirmation email.

Please bring:

  • A face covering
  • Water
  • Snacks
  • Appropriate clothing (work gloves, mud boots, layers, sun protection), and
  • Tools you may have such as shovels or saws.

In accordance with our Covid-19 health protocols, all participants will also be required to fill out a health self-assessment form within 24 hours before the event.
